MEET GIANLUCA
15 years rope in one minute

SESSION 1: TECHNICAL FOUNDATIONS & AERIAL PROPRIOCEPTION

Saturday, March 7 | 15:30 – 17:30
Rope/Fabric • Beginner/Intermediate

Building a solid foundation begins with understanding our body in space. This session focuses on aerial proprioception – seeking balance in the air by activating specific body parts and exploring support points with the apparatus.

WHAT IS AERIAL PROPRIOCEPTION?
“Aerial proprioception” is an expression I created, referring to the search for constant balance as well as self-awareness in the air and in space. This type of work is especially present in rolling up and down.
KEYS & BASIC FIGURES
Initial analysis of fundamental positions and their role in building complete vocabulary
PHYSICAL PREPARATION
Specific warm-up and conditioning for aerial work, the foundation for safe practice
CONTROL SEQUENCES
Roll-up and roll-down exercises introducing aerial proprioception concepts
STATIC VOCABULARY
Essential positions: plank, meat hook, back flag, balances, scorpion – analyzing possibilities for development
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Preferably at least one year of training on fabric or rope
  • Ability to invert in straddle (even with bent arms)
  • Ability to enter belly key (even with bent arms)
Open to practitioners of rope only, fabric only, or both apparatuses.

SESSION 2: DYNAMICS & MOVEMENT FLOW

Saturday, March 7 | 18:00 – 20:00
Rope/Fabric • Intermediate/Advanced

Moving from static positions into dynamic sequences requires proper preparation and understanding of oscillations. This session explores how dynamic movements transform our vocabulary into fluid, expressive sequences. Dynamic work on both rope and fabric is similar yet different at the same time, allowing for a more complete understanding of dynamic aerial movement.

DYNAMIC PREPARATION
Specific physical preparation for oscillations and dynamic movements
EXPLORING OSCILLATIONS
Understanding and applying dynamics to known figures and sequences
TRANSITIONS & CONNECTIONS
Creating organic movement by linking individual elements together
DYNAMIC-ONLY MOVEMENTS
Exercises and transitions where dynamics are the sole element
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Preferably several years of rope or fabric practice with solid control
  • Ability to invert in straddle (ideally with straight arms)
  • Ability to enter belly key (ideally with straight arms)
  • Previous experience in aerial dynamics not required, but recommended
Open to practitioners of rope only, fabric only, or both apparatuses.

SESSION 3: ROLL UP

Sunday, March 8 | 10:00 – 12:00
Rope/Fabric • Intermediate/Advanced

The technical work of rolling up and down increases one’s spatial self-awareness by using gravity as a physical force to play with. The study of roll ups and roll downs is extremely detailed and specific, allowing practitioners to better master any aerial apparatus.

SPECIFIC PHYSICAL PREPARATION EXERCISES
Work begins on the floor and in the air but in place, identifying twists and anchor points that are fundamental to rolling up and down
STUDY OF STATIC BALANCE POSITIONS
Back balance, front balance, meat hook, and their application to rolls
ROLL DOWN BEFORE ROLLING UP
Study of roll downs, C-shapes and S-wraps, using gravity while seeking full-body control
ROLL UP—FINALLY!
Study of various types of roll ups, both dynamic and controlled
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Preferably several years of rope or fabric practice with solid control
  • Ability to invert in straddle (even with bent arms but straight legs)
  • Ability to enter belly key (even with bent arms but straight legs)
  • Prior experience with S-wrap roll downs is preferred

SESSION 4: STRAPS

Sunday, March 8 | 12:30 – 14:30
Straps • Open Level

This workshop is open to all levels and is an opportunity for discovery for some and deepening for others who already practice. During the class, the group will be divided by level.

I began studying aerial straps alongside rope as a complementary and at times similar discipline. I recommend this apparatus to anyone who practices aerial arts, as it develops a physical preparation that benefits any apparatus. Part of the work will be dedicated to a detailed study of correct posture and which body parts to activate to conserve energy and navigate effectively in the air.

STUDY OF STATIC POSITIONS
Meat hook, back flag, scorpions, and their evolutions through preparatory figures for more advanced work – focusing on strength and flexibility
WORK WITH STRAPS WRAPPED AROUND THE ARMS
Back balance, handstands, and preparatory work for roll ups or, for those who already practice them, refinement work
LEVEL-SPECIFIC WORK
Beginner level: Analysis of basic sequences
Advanced level: Study of back flag and one-arm work
DYNAMICS & SWINGS
Analysis of dynamic movements and swings; study of spin and flair on two arms and one arm
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Prior experience with straps (even minimal) is preferred if the participant already practices aerial acrobatics on other apparatuses
  • Ability to invert in straddle (even with bent arms but straight legs)
Since this is a mixed-level workshop, the group will be divided by level during the class.

GIANLUCA’S TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

“I imagine the workshop as a laboratory where everyone is given different stimuli than their level; I work for years with amateurs and professionals of all ages and technical and artistic levels and more and more I believe that everyone thinks to have a different level from what he really has or otherwise he has already learned everything you should know about an aerial tool! After 15 years of teaching, I can say that I still learn things, sometimes from my own students and I hope that this Research never ends!”
